This week Seagate released the 2nd generation of its Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive.
If you’ve read my posts from early 2011, you know the first-generation Momentus XT had some issues with select MacBook Pro users.

- Momentus XT and the MacBook Pro…what’s Seagate doing?
- Momentus XT and MacBooks: what’s the latest from Seagate?
- Seagate Momentus XT SD25 firmware update coming this week
Seagate found out about them via its online forum and quickly jumped in to try to diagnose and remedy the problem. For many Mac users it was a frustrating process, and one that in some cases did not entirely fix the problem. But what was great about the experience is that the team at Seagate working on Momentus XT had established a personal relationship with a community of Mac customers. One-on-one discussions, feedback, user testing, etc. all valuable insights that cannot be entirely recreated within Seagate labs by Seagate engineers. Such relationships provided Seagate with additional knowledge that went directly into the design of the latest Momentus XT 750GB drive.
And so far…it has paid off.

So, as a Seagate guy, I love it when we engage with customers using our products, listen to their insights, and apply their needs directly to our design and engineering process. There is nothing like the power of community, and this is evidence that it goes way beyond solving immediate problems. It shapes the products we bring to market, and in the case of Momentus XT 750GB – the customer is always right.
